Okun Daughters Forum is a registered body that brings together Okun Daughters by birth or marriage, across the six (6) local governments of Kabba /Bunu /Ijumu /Yagba West /Yagba East /Mopa – Amuro /Lokoja (Oworo) in Kogi West Senatorial District.
To act as good representation and Voice of Okun Women in Politics, Academics, Business and other areas of human endeavours, within and outside Kogi State, so as to ensure Gender Equality and a force to reckon with in the society.
To ignite, inspire, mentor and empower the Okun Women towards making a positive contribution to Okun Land in particular, Kogi State, Nigeria and the World at large.
The National Executive Council and the entire members of Okun Daughters Forum (ODF) lauds the efforts of the pacesetter – Governor Yahaya Bello on gender equality, and 35% women inclusiveness in good governance.
Okun Daughters Forum stated that His Excellency has brought to bare what seemed to have been mere pronouncements over the years.
ODF could not contain her joy at the declarations of the Governor to have female Vice Chairmen, Councilors, as well as Council Leaders across the 21 local governments of the State because this falls within the vision and mission of the Forum.
We appreciate His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello for believing in the competence of women folks, and creating history which has invariably come to stay in Kogi State, and by extension all over the Country.
The efforts of Her Excellency Mrs Rashidat Bello, all female appointees and other women advocacy groups and critical Stakeholders within and outside the State can not be overemphasized.
Need for Women Participation
Having critical mass of women in leadership and decision-making positions is positive for human development in all countries – whether developed or developing and whether countries are living in peace or recovering from conflicts, or in the process of a democratic transition. This the Governor has well demonstrated beyond mere words.
By giving fair representation and participation to women in governance, His Excellency has fulfilled one of the preconditions for achieving genuine democracy because when there is a critical mass of women decision-makers, just as we have today in our dear State, the issues which previously went unaddressed would become priorities to our women representatives across the State.
We are confident that women’s participation in politics would help advance gender equality and also affect both the range of Policy issues that get considered and the types that are proposed.
On our honour as Okun Daughters, we believe our female representatives across the State and Kogi West in particular would strive to :
- Work across party lines.
- Be highly responsive to constituents concerns.
- Help secure lasting peace.
- Encourage citizens confidence in democracy through their own participation, and
- Prioritize health, education and other key development indicators.
We sincerely appreciate His Excellency for giving our First National President in person of Hon. Towonifinni Mosiko, Councilor representing Akutupa-Kiri Ward, who also doubles as the Council Leader for Kabba /Bunu Local Government, the opportunity to serve.
We have no doubt that she would perform beyond your expectations, Your Excellency and also project the Values of a true Okun Daughter just like her counterparts.
Okun Daughters Forum just like many other female groups in the State anticipate the extension of the mandatory 35% women inclusion at the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and the Senate.
ODF is glad to associate with His Excellency Governor Yahaya Bello and Her Excellency Mrs Rashidat Bello in Gender Equality Advocacy.
